The Laws Must Be Made To Work – African Minerals Agreement Is Improper

 
Green Scenery on August 20, 2010, claimed that African Minerals Limited (AML) flouted environmental procedures, hence
the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Act 2008 and by extension the Mines and Minerals Act of 2009. Our claim was
justified by Ag. Deputy Director of SLEPA, Mr. Momodu Bah on the popular TV show – Good Morning Salone, on August
31
st
 2010. That is why we urge the Minister to recall the AML agreement and set right the critical issues around
Environmental Impact Assessment and Environmental Management Plan.

 

VICTIMISING THE VICTIMS OF LAND GRABBING IN MALEN CHIEFDOM

Since the advent of large scale investment in oil palm plantation by SOCFIN Agricultural
Company (SAC) in Malen Chiefdom, citizens of the chiefdom, land owners and users who
are opposed to the manner in which their land was ascribed by the government through
the chiefs have not seen any respite.

More than a hundred representatives of landholding families from 36 villages affected by a large- scale investor in oil
palm plantation in Malen Chiefdom, Pujehun District, have signed a resolution stating that they disassociate
themselves from any lease agreement signed on their behalf by the Paramount Chief and chiefdom authorities of
Malen Chiefdom with the Government of Sierra Leone. Furthermore, it says “…we will no longer allow the Socfin
Agricultural Company personnel and or their machines to enter upon or operate on our land.” The resolution was

Green Scenery, a None-Governmental organization, monitoring large scale land investments in Sierra
Leone, has been informed that a ten-acre plantation of oil palm, cola nuts, coffee and cacao has been completely
destroyed by employees of Socfin Agricultural Company S.L. (SAC) in Malen Chiefdom, Pujehun District.  
The incident occurred in Kassay, one of the villages in the area leased by SAC to establish a large scale oil palm
